Sophie Mashlan

About

Sophie Mashlan is one of the most evocative new artists on the New Zealand indie scene.

With a sound steeped in folk, but also shining with a unique and refreshing blend of indie pop, the young singer-songwriter is without question an ‘act to watch’.

At 15, Sophie found herself immersed in the Auckland folk scene, where she found a strong sense of community and comfort. She felt welcomed by a group that was inclusive and real. At folk bars, clubs and festivals, Sophie become a familiar face. She honed her live performance, moulding her own special sound and style and bringing something completely new to the table.

It was also her passion for performing live and a sheer determination to forge her own path in music, which at just 17 years of age, led her to organise her first tour. Within two years, the now 19-year-old had chalked up numerous shows and tours, including support slots for well-known acts such as Vance Joy, Boyce Avenue, Joshua Radin, Graham Candy and Donovan Frankenreiter, who she opened for on his 2018 New Zealand tour.

She’s also been tipped by YouTube as an “Artist to Watch” and had her singles land on Apple Music’s “Best of the Week”.

Sophie’s first album was released to positive reviews, and within three days of it’s release debuted in the Top 20 New Zealand Album Charts.

“Sophie Mashlan is a preternaturally mature writer on the evidence of this album which announces an impressive talent to be heeded right now but is also going to be one to follow.” – Graham Reid, Elsewhere
